The Vancouver Airport Authority is holding its annual Project Green YVR Annual Summit on Nov. 21, from 9 a.m. until noon.

“The Project Green YVR Annual Summit is our signature event, bringing all businesses on Sea Island together to continue to build our growing community of environmental leaders,” says Amanda Chow, a senior environmental strategist at Vancouver Airport Authority.

Project Green YVR is an initiative that focuses on helping business on Sea Island reduce their environmental footprint and save money through various programs. The project launched in 2019, and started off with seven businesses reducing waste, water, and energy use to limit their environmental footprints.

“Businesses around Sea Island are encouraged to attend the event to learn more about environmental initiatives and network with other Sea Island businesses,” says Chow.

Sea Island businesses can also join different Project Green programs. For instance, EnergyWise@YVR is a BC Hydro-supported initiative that identifies technical and behavioural energy-saving opportunities at businesses. Another program that businesses can partake in is Waste Wars, by diverting as much waste as possible from landfill and improving recycling.

The Water Fixture Rebate Program aims to minimize costs related to water treatment and water waste disposal by funding initiatives tailored to a business, such as kitchen or washroom fixture replacements. Vancouver Airport Authority also rewards businesses that show outstanding commitment to having a reduced environmental footprint by giving them an award made from recycled airport chopsticks, as well as a feature on the airport’s blog and social media channels.

Sea Island businesses are also encouraged to become YVR Green Partners. By becoming a YVR Green Partner, businesses will receive a seal to promote their commitment to the environment, be eligible to win the YVR Green Excellence Award, learn about rebates and incentives from the Vancouver Airport Authority, receive one-on-one advising, and more. Some active YVR Green Partners include Fairmont Vancouver Airport, McArthurGlen Designer Outlet, World Duty Free Group, and Skyteam Lounge.

The first Project Green YVR Annual Summit was last year, and organizers are excited to be able to host the event in-person this year, allowing businesses to interact and make physical connections.

“Despite this challenge, we were still able to go ahead with the (2021) event virtually. This year, we’re excited that COVID-19 restrictions have lifted, and we can hold this event in-person,” says Chow.

Registration is open until 5 p.m. on Nov. 14. For more information, visit yvr.ca/en/about-yvr/environment/project-green-yvr.
